Player Bio: Chase Winovich played both linebacker and quarterback at Thomas Jefferson High School in Pennsylvania. Despite being a lifelong Ohio State fan, he decided to play college ball for the Buckeyes' long-time arch-rivals, the Michigan Wolverines. He started his collegiate playing career as a linebacker before moving to tight end as a sophomore before ending up at the defensive end. He made the All-Big Ten team in 2017 after logging eight sacks, including three in a game against Purdue. He once again was named to the All-Big Ten team in 2018, as well as several All-America teams, including third-team All America from the Associated Press

#15 chase winovich vs. notre dame (2018)

Strengths: Winovich has the kind of high-motor, an all-out approach that coaches like in a defensive lineman. Good quickness and above average pursuit skills. Hard-hitting, aggressive player who does not take plays off. Not afraid to stick his nose in there and do the 'grunt" work needed to blow up a play, even if others get credit for the tackle. He uses his hands well, which played in one of the top conferences in the country against talented opponents. Lots of big-game experience, and after playing in front of crowds of 100,000 in home games at Michigan, Winovich is not likely to find the NFL stage too intimidating. Enjoys tackling. Good citizen off the field with no red flags.

Weaknesses: Played in a 4-3 defense at Michigan, probably would have to play outside linebacker with the Rams because of his size. That also means learning a new defense. The player was not required to be in pass coverage at Michigan. Can sometimes be overwhelmed by more massive blockers. By being he so aggressive, Winovich can sometimes get misled on counters and trick plays and get out of position. Athletic enough, but does not have the elite athleticism of some of the likely top picks at his position. College sack numbers were good, but not great.

Draft Grade: 5.75

Draft Projection: Third  Round

Does He Fit?:  Yes, but he might not start right away because he will have to learn the Wade Phillips 3-4 defense. Winovich has the warrior attitude coaches love and no glaring weaknesses. It is not hard to see the Rams grabbing Winovich with one of their two third-round picks, especially if they do not take an edge player before that point.
