DRAFT YR:
  2019     COMBINE INVITE: YES

Player Bio: Ed Oliver prepped at Westfield High School in Houston, TX and 2016 became the five-star consensus recruit his senior year that potentially every primary school sought after. Oliver received numerous offers but elected to stay home and play at the nearby University of Houston. As a true freshman, Oliver lived up to the hype from the day of his playing career for the Cougars. He presented to the opposing offensive lines a great deal of crisis on trying to find ways to block him. His freshman year, Oliver finished the year with 65 total tackles, 22 tackles for loss, and five sacks. By the time Oliver completed his Sophomore year, he would become the Defensive Player of the Year after recording  73 total tackles, 16 1/2 tackles for loss, and also producing 5 1/2 sacks. By obtaining so much success early, teams produced constant double-teamed blocking to contain the undersized sophomore nose tackle in the Cougars three-manned alignment up front. Oliver junior year became even tougher, as the team provided even tripled-team blocking assignments against him so that he could not disrupt the offense. Oliver injured his knee and missed four games due to the fact, however before the injury he registered 54 total tackles, 14 1/2 tackles for loss and three sacks in eight games he played. During his missed games head coach Major Applewhite and Oliver would get in a confrontation on the sideline regarding players who didn't suit up could not wear a team jacket on the sideline. Oliver soon would later announce that he would forego his senior and apply to the 2019 NFL Draft. Oliver ended his career by being named the first Houston Cougar to earn All-American three times in the history of Houston's football. Oliver also became the first player in the Cougars history to earn First-Team all-conference honors in three consecutive years.

Game Film
#10 ed oliver vs. rice (2018)

Strengths: A very explosive first step off the snap, and very disruptive to offenses. Very athletic and fluid, with great movement. Uses hands well to change directions quickly with exceptional sideline to sideline speed. Provide consistent leverage on the opponents and fires through the gaps behind the line of scrimmage.  Always keeps his feet motoring forward that draws double-team blocks in the middle of the field. Impacts the defensive play when able to outmatch his blocker. A player that is versatile and can play the zero, three, or five-technique positions. Plays angry and is very instinctive

Weaknesses: Despite being disruptive, is a bit of an undersized player who will need to embed bulk to his frame. Cannot the zero-technique at the next level weighing at 287 pounds consistently. Will get manhandled by bigger linemen on down blocks, and even with double-team blocking schemes. Gets clogged up in the middle forcing to work harder to disengage from the blocks. Loses vision with glued to blockers and looking to release for a play. Despite great first step, is a target for short-yardage plays. Will try to run around potential bigger blockers oppose to facing head on and shedding to make plays.

Draft Grade: 6.26

Draft Projection: 1st Round

Does He Fit?: Absolutely! Even though Oliver is slated to go within the first five picks, we have seen weirder things occur on draft day. Could he possibly slide down to the middle round picks? Will the Rams at that point make another wise decision and trade up to select him? Oliver is another slightly undersized defensive lineman such as Aaron Donald who can come in and be a Day-1 starter for the Rams. He fits in excellently as he played the zero-technique the better of his career at Houston. However, he would benefit by adding weight, and new defensive line Coach Henderson will be encouraged to help Oliver grow into the dominant collegiate player was at Houston.

Player Comparison: Aaron Donald
