GAME FILM
#6 JACOB PHILLIPS VS AUBURN (2019)

Strengths: He is a tall and rangy linebacker with the side-line-to side-line speed that enables him to have a broad tackling radius. He is a solid tackler who generally makes the tackle when engaged. He has quick hands and an excellent grip to lock down on the ball carrier and suppresses him immediately. Against the run, he wins the leverage battle because of his ability to shoot the gaps against slower offensive linemen and disallow them from attacking his torso area. He has reasonable body control that allows him to redirect his pursuit if overplayed. He has ball-hawking skills that contribute to blowing up or negating screens, swings, flares, and circle routes from the backfield.

Weaknesses: He slowly processes plays that enables him to analyze and predict which gaps to shoot. It appears that he is frequently overpursuing or slipping away from the ball, where he has to redirect his body. Despite a solid tackler, he is not the one that lays the hat when required. In pass coverages out in drops, he susceptible to this area. It appears that he lacks confidence in space and stay with the routes. He lacks the beneficial peripheral vision to eye the receiver and quarterback. He will be a two-year project to become a starter and probably will be a special teams contributor and deep depth backup.

Draft Grade: 5.90

Draft Projection: 4th - 5th round

NFL Comparison: Todd Davis

The Rams actually drafted him, huh? I never thought that he was going to get this high in the draft, though. I know that he is a splendid athlete, but he is a bit raw. The Rams need a player that they can plug into their roster immediately. We do not need a player that needs developing, but that may be a good thing. We can still rest assured that this player is going to develop in the latter years of this franchise.
