DRAFT YR:  2019     COMBINE INVITE: YES

Player Bio: Andrew Wingard played High school football in Arvada, Colorado where he was the Gatorade player of the year in 2014. He had scholarship offers from the University of Colorado and several other programs but chose to head north to the University of Wyoming to play for Craig Bohl, who was a position coach for Wingard's father at the University of Nebraska. Wingard earned his name selection to the All-Mountain West First team in three consecutive years. Andrew Wingard is one of those guys who will not blow people away with his combine numbers, but he executes plays on the football field and plays hard until the whistle blows.

Game Film
#28 Andrew Wingard vs. Iowa (2017)

Strengths: A sturdy, high motor player who is not afraid to hit or be hit. A sure tackler who finished tied for 11th in the all-time FBS total tackles list. Surprisingly good in run defense despite his smallish size, Wingard is not afraid to stick his nose into the fray and always seems to be involved in the tackle. A sound technician in terms of angles. Wingard has the perfect mental toughness and makeup to be a solid to perfect special teams player if that is what he must to do to make the team. Has a nose for the ball, recorded five interceptions as a junior and two more as a senior. Wingard is a football player in the real sense of that phrase, and he always made his presence felt on the field during his time with the Cowboys.

Weaknesses: Wingard is neither especially big nor all that fast, and had some problems with pass interference calls in college, in part because of a tendency to not turn around and play the ball. Because of his physical limitations, he is not great in pass coverage and fast enough to recover when he does get beat in coverage. Wingard can be a little over-aggressive in biting on the run on play-action plays.

Draft Grade: 5.38

Draft Projection:  6th - 7th round

Does He Fit?: Yes, As a day three selection who could immediately contribute on special teams. Wingard is a chronic over-achiever and some of his flaws in terms of unnecessary flags should be correctable with coaching. Wingard is not going to start right away, but with the Rams set at the safety position he could excel on special teams and benefit from coaching and learning from  veterans such as Eric Weddle.

NFL Comparison: Larry Asante
