Game Film
#38 Johnathan Abram vs. Ole’ Miss (2018)

Strengths: An all around player that plays hard with great instincts and a very cerebral player. Has excellent speed who can cover much ground on the field. A player with versatility that can play both safety positions. Probably a better fit playing the strong safety position. Display physicality and competitive toughness of a fierce tackler with a reputation of a hard hitter.  Has the ability to play both man or zone coverages. A definite playmaker on the field, with the ability to read and react quickly, and creates destruction to offenses. A good tackler who can play in the box and defend against the run. An excellent open-field tackler with the ability to attack the play from downhill. Is excellent as a blitzer, who will transition well at the next level. A two-year starter that is very experienced played well even as a first-year player who will be a year one starter.

Weaknesses: Will have early-on issues at the free safety position as he not every down free safety. Despite an aggressive and man cover safety, excellent instincts will prompt him to bite against play action passes. Despite cover skills, not fluid enough to play one-on-one on slot receivers.  Does not find the ball quickly as resulting in running through receivers and receiving penalties. Tends to overcommit resulting him not able to change direction in space. Playing at top speed will tend to miss makeable tackles. Undercuts a lot despite being a big hitter, will need to learn to wrap up more often at the next level.

Draft Grade: 5.85

Draft Projection: 1st Round

Does He Fit?: Yes, the Rams have added free agent Eric Weddle at the free safety position and probably have about two good years left in his veteran body. As a safe and reliable upgrade at the position, selecting Abraham can learn to develop as a viable free safety at the next level. Abram is a special player that has the heart of a lion and the thump of a rhinoceros who impactful to a defense.
