DRAFT YR:
  2019     COMBINE INVITE: YES

Player Bio: Nate Herbig, better known as "The Big Island" is a kid from Hawaii that played at the legendary powerhouse St. Louis High School. Notable players that currently play in the NFL such as Marcus Mariota, Tyson Alualu, and Kamalei Correa, may have made the wrong decision declaring a year early to the NFL from Stanford. Herbig played well his sophomore year opening up lanes for running back Bryce Love earning him an All-Pac-12 First-Team selection. However, injuries plagued his junior season where his play was subpar on film.  It did not get any better for Herbig at the 2019 NFL Combine, where he posted poor numbers at his position. One area he did well was the bench press with 29 reps. Herbig is a massive guard and trimming down his weight and improve in pass protection would help him at the next level.

Game Film
#63 Nate "Big Island" Herbig vs. USC (2018)

Strengths: Massive body frame to assist with executing difficult blocking schemes. Tremendously strong and has a great deal of power at the first point of contact in the run game. Very mobile for his massive size with the ability and agility to kick out as a lead blocker and secure his zones. Use his hand and arms well in pass blocking and maintaining leverage. Maintaining leverage engaged with a strong rusher keeps his lower body bent with a good base from lower base. Recognizes defensive stunts and and knowledge to know when to release inside responsibility to kick out for speed rusher.

Weaknesses: Appears to become lackadaisical at times on the field in which may question his consistency of play. Tends to expect his massive size to overwhelm defenders when engaged.  As a pass blocker expects to slow defender down with initial hand jam and and not using his legs. Lack lateral range and directional change on passing downs. Crafty linebackers easily can sidestepped him anticipating the initial punch. He doesn't really bring the functional application to his strength that's needed to be viewed.

Draft Grade:  5.45

Draft Projection: 6th - 7th Round

Does He Fit?: Not immediately... Herbig is an interior offensive lineman that is not an athletic liability and at least is a one year project. With the run game, like playing inside a phone booth where he is very abrasive and plays tough. Herbig is a mammoth, heavy-footed interior offensive lineman who has the implement of a high percentage of gap/powering runs. Has excellent upper body strength and punch power to extract defensive rushers at times and successfully absorbs power rushes. Herbig is a lower tier player who can fill a depth role when needed. Goal line or short yardage line that will win the majority of his head-to-head blocking assignments. The Rams run game will need extra depth after losing Roger Saffold to free agency.
