Vaughns was an electrifying running back at Pearl-Cohn, rushing for over 2,000 yards his junior and senior years. In his senior year, he rushed for 2,646 yards and 45 touchdowns. After one game, he rushed for 341 yards and six touchdowns, and two hours later was taking orders at McDonald's Drive-Thru to assist with his mother's finances. He went on to be named the 2014 Tennessee Gatorade Player of the Year, 2014 Tennessee Mr. Football, and the 2014 Mr. 4A Back of the Year. He was a Two-time All-state, Two-time All-Mid-State, and Two-Time All-Region and played all four years on varsity. He would accept a scholarship to the University of Illinois and spent two seasons before transferring to Vanderbilt.
