He had offers from Alabama, Michigan, and Ohio State; however, he chose to sign with the University of Oklahoma. Sermon graduated early and enrolled early at Oklahoma to participate during spring practices. He rushed for 2,076 yards and 36 receptions for 391 touchdowns and three touchdowns during his OU career. He would break his foot in his junior year at OU and miss the season's remaining games. Tre graduated early and opted out of the NFL Draft, and transferred to Ohio St for his senior year. Sermon would choose an excellent decision, as he had a prominent senior season in a modified season due to a pandemic; he led the team in rushing in six games for 675 yards averaging eight yards per rush. In the 2020 Big Ten Championship, he would break the schools rushing record held by Eddie George of 304 yards with 331 in that game. Sermon continued his tear on the ground with 191 yards on the ground and 61 receiving yards in the BCS playoffs. He has increased his stock significantly in his last two games going into the 2021 NFL Draft.
