Player Bio: Marques Ford prepped at East Bay High School in Gibsonton, FL. His senior year, he received an invitation to play in the 2016 Under Armour All-America Game. He was a four-star recruit who originally committed to Tennessee but decided to play at Rutgers. Rutgers dismissed Ford following an alleged accusation of sexual assault; however, the outcome of the accusations ending up getting head coach Kyle Flood fired. Ford enrolled at Jones County Junior College in Mississippi, and his first season, he recorded 17 tackles ( 7.5 for loss), and 9.5 sacks. He committed to East Carolina, however pressure from concerned alumnus rescinded his offer, and Ford enrolled at Bethune-Cookman and paved his way as an NFL draft prospect. In the video to the left, you can see the athleticism from Marques Ford as he runs his 40-yard dash and field drills. You immediately can see his quick footwork and how easily he explode off that first step. You see the tightness in the end and not have that great bend in the cone drill as he comes out that last turn slightly too wide. |
Strengths: He is a "freak of nature" with a physically healthy body and with excellent footwork. He can attack the line of scrimmage in a variety of ways. He uses his long wingspan proper hand usage to shock the blocker to gain his competitive edge. Rarely does the blocker gets inside of his chest to move him out the play, has the right balance, and recognizes chop blocks. He plays well against the run anticipating the runner's gap attack and generally is on point. As a pass rusher, he is disruptive, and he has an explosive first step to accommodate his long wingspan. He uses a bullrush, a rip, and an impressive up-and-under move. He has just an average bend from the edge; however, his downhill attack makes up for the lacks that. He will chase down the play from the backside with a high motor; he is a good tackler and finishes it wherever. A 3-4 defensive scheme is the perfect fit for Ford, where he can play as a standup or with his hand down in the turf.
Weaknesses: His level of competition will stick out whether he can bring the same tenacity and pressure at the next level. He is not as fluid in the hips and displays some slight tightness that does not allow him to have that great bend off the edge. He needs to add about ten more pounds to his frame to hold up against bigger and stronger tackles. He tends to shoot his punch but wastes about a half-to-one second disengaging from his counter. He occasionally gets above the pad level allowing the blocker to stand him straight up and halt his attack. Despite being a for certain tackler, he does tackle a bit above the pad level. At the next level, the taller and stronger running backs will duck underneath and overpower him with stiff arms. He does have a red flag after initially being dismissed from Rutgers after accusations of an alleged sexual assault that led to the university getting sued.
Draft Grade: 6.20
Draft Projection: 4th - 6th round
NFL Comparison: Jadeveon Clowney
