The Los Angles Rams running back Todd Gurley, playing in his third season, is having a phenomenal season thus far. In fact, he’s actually looking as if he’s having a lot of fun on the field early in this 2017 football season. His body language, or better yet his swag, as the new generation calls it, display the tone that he’s loving the Rams rookie head coach Sean McVay’s offense.
Gurley numbers have been impressive this season, as he was able to eclipse for the first time after 20 consecutive games, going over 100 yards rushing. This mark dated back to the end of his 2015 rookie season. He didn’t shortchange himself last Thursday night, as his epic performance that night of 28 carries for 113 yards, five receptions for 36 yards, and scoring three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving. Coming off a disappointing loss to the Washington Redskins in week two, Gurley commented that last season team would have given up being down by 17 points early in the game. However, it seemed as if he owed the Ram fans for a costly fumble he gave away deep of the Rams side of a field allowing the Redskins score. Gurley has taken charge of this Rams offense by putting it on his shoulders and help to engineer the Rams team on scoring some 41 points, and scoring over 40 points the second time of this season. Johnson not done, as he caused more havoc for the Colts offense, as he created a forced fumble and recovery, as Hilton tried to shake Johnson after a short pass reception. Hilton would pick up the first down, but a quick poke by Johnson caused the ball to squirt out as he pounced on top.
Kavon Webster, the starting corner, left the game early in the third quarter with an apparent shoulder injury but played well before exiting the game. Rookie undrafted free agent defensive back, Dominique Hatfield left the game with a concussion-related injury but was solid while on the field.
The secondary was able to minimize the Colts passing game with a combined total of 179 total receiving yards. The Colts gained 50 of those yards on a fourth-quarter pass by replacement quarterback Jacoby Brissett, hitting Donte Montcrief deep. Moncrief made a significant adjustment to the ball to beat reserve corner Blake Countess; the Colts would score a few plays later.
The defensive backs were flying all over the field batting down passes, hitting ball carriers, and of course, intercepting the football. The Rams will be optimistic that they continue to play with that same level of intensity when they play the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

The Rams special teams were like money in the bank, safe. It gets no better than Rams veteran punter Johnny Hekker. Rams recently this week awarded Hekker with an extension to lock him up through 2022, and $10 million guaranteed.
Hekker pinned the Colts inside of the 10-yard line practically every time he punted the ball. He leads the league with spotted punts and rarely is there a return. Look below and watch Hekker's craft in ball placement.

Kicker Greg "Legatron" Zuerline, has been Mr. Automatic from the preseason to week one against the Colts. He yet to have missed a kick, and have been planting the ball in the back of the end zone during kickoffs.
Legatron nailed a 50-yard field goal against the Colts to give the Rams an early 3-0 lead. He kicked two more fields to remain perfect for the season, including this P.A.T.'s. His leg and Hekker's makes a single kicking punch that can use as the 12th man.
Cory Littleton, Samson Ebukam, and Josh Reynolds added great special team contribution too.

Game Preview of Redskins Vs Rams
Overview
This game could tell us a lot about whether the Los Angeles Rams are a potential playoff contender in 2017, or whether their opening day trouncing of Indianapolis was more about the Colts being wrong than about the Rams being good. Washington is not an elite team, but they are at least a fringe-type playoff contender. That probably can't be said about the Indianapolis Colts.

Matchup To Watch: Sammy Watkins vs Josh Norman
Rams Offense Vs. Washington Defense
One of the key matchups here could be Rams receiver Sammy Watkins against Redskins corner Josh Norman, who is widely considered to be about as close to being a "shutdown corner" as you will find in the NFL today.
It has appeared that the Redskins were assigning Norman to cover the leagues top receiver's more so than was the case last year, which could lead to an epic battle between two of the league's better players.
Rookie Rams receiver Cooper Kupp and tight end Gerald Everett could come into play if Watkins is not able to win that battle. One of the few things that didn't go especially well for the Rams against Indy was the running of Todd Gurley, although in fairness, a couple of nice runs by Gurley were nullified by penalties. The Rams would certainly like to see him put up some better numbers this week.

The great play of Los Angeles Rams starting cornerback Trumaine Johnson on Sunday showed many fans on why he was ranked the highest and the number one corner on the market. Johnson in his sixth season as a member of the Rams showed the Indianapolis Colts quarterback Scott Tolzien that he wasn't a lie, by showing him the Truth with his defensive play.
Early in the first quarter, the Rams took a quick 3-0 lead over the Colts, as Tolzien attempted to complete a pass to wide receiver T.Y.Hilton, who was being covered by Johnson. Hilton, blanketed by Johnson coverage, couldn't do anything but watch Johnson intercept his intended pass and took it to the house for a 39-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Trumaine Johnson's Pick Six
This past off-season, Johnson was criticized by many fans of not working out a long-term contract extension to remain with the organization. The season prior, the Rams took a gamble by placing the franchise tag on Johnson that allowed Janoris Jenkins to walk away and sign with the New York Giants. Unable to come to a long-term deal with Johnson that offseason, the Rams placed the franchise tag on Johnson earning him nearly $14 million for the season.
Johnson and the Rams couldn’t work out a long-term deal this offseason either, as they placed the tag on him for the second consecutive season, earning him $16.7 million for the season. Both sides, being unable to come to terms, before the start of training camp, Johnson reported that it was clear he was not part of the Ram's plan moving forward. Rarely, do a team will find a cornerback standing 6-foot-2-inches, 210 pounds. They surely need to find a way to keep Johnson in Los Angeles to continue to work in a Wade Phillips defense.
The Rams placed a spanking on the visiting Colts on Sunday, as Johnson would end the day with one interception, one touchdown for 39 yards, two tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and one pass deflected. I'm confident, how about you, but Johnson showed up like he was having fun wearing the horns on Sunday. Defensive Coordinator Phillips seemed to be quite happy with Johnson's play, as he merely played a flawless game.
With the coverage Johnson played against the elite receiver, T.Y. Hilton, it visibly clear that Rams General Manager Les Snead will need to find a solution of trying to get this young Ram’s defense resigned with long-term deals.
Linebacker Alec Ogletree is playing in the final year of his contract of $8 million, as well as LeMarcus Joyner whom will be seeking extension talk. To add to the equation, recent holdout Aaron Donald is currently looking for an extension as well to his rookie contract.
No doubt about it, Jeff Fisher thumbprint will remain on this organization no matter how you try to erase his memory, as he stockpiled a great defense with great talented players. Without a doubt, as Johnson was part of Fisher's first draft class out of the University of Montana, he has been a great player despite his miserable 2016 season.
Expect to see Johnson contract negotiation become worked out within the next several weeks when the Rams face the Dallas Cowboys. Not a question that Tru will be matched up against the Cowboys best receiver Dez Bryant. If Johnson contains Bryant all game, we'll have to watch for the ticker of an extension for Johnson to be reported.

The Rams have released C/G J.J. Dielman, the claimed hours after the 53-man rosters were set across the NFL. Dielman who was a fifth-round selection for the Cincinnati Bengals didn't survive the Bengals final cuts, largely because he was outperformed.
The Rams claimed Dielman on September 3, 2017 (a younger cousin of Kris Dielman pro-bowl guard for the San Diego Chargers), because of his versatility and ability to play all over the offensive line. The release comes just days after the Rams were granted a roster exemption for All-Pro Defensive Lineman Aaron Donald, who ended his holdout on last Saturday, to rejoin the team. The Rams needed a roster spot but, it was a tough decision, as Dielman became the last man out.
The Rams reported they have the desire to have Dielman to return back to the team, and is optimistic that he will clear waivers and be signed to the practice squad. Dielman could be a hot commodity to other teams in the league, largely because of the immediate need of offensive linemen.

The Rams announced on Monday the extension of DL Ethan Westbrooks and punter Johnny Hekker.
Westbrooks, a 2014 UDFA out of West Texas A&M, signed back then a three year $1,550,000 contract; in April of the current year, the Rams managed to sign the RFA to a $1,797,000 deal that would link the player with the organization for one more year (reported by Ian Rapoport). In efforts to create much-needed cap space that will be used to sign Aaron Donald among other players, the front office offered Westbrooks a new contract extension through 2018, that will lower his 2017 salary from $1,797,000 to $1,250,000 but will earn him $1,750,000 in 2018. Westbrooks has shown signs throughout his career of being a capable starter, is a tremendous depth sign for an already killer Defensive line.

Hekker, who already had an extension encouraged by his outstanding game with the previous regime, signed a new contract extension that would leave the best punter in league with the Rams through 2022. Johnny established an NFL record of 51punts landing inside the 20, no other punter in history has had more than 40, showing the fantastic value to a team that has struggled in moving the ball in the past.
Former NFL punter Pat McAfee analyzed one of Hekker’s punts yesterday, remarking his amazing capabilities at the position, naming him “the best punter in the league.”
His contract is now worth $21 million, including $10,000,000 in guaranteed money, the highest ever given to a punter in history, pointed out by Adam Schefter of ESPN.
By locking these two players for the foreseeable future, the Rams now seek to reach calm waters with Aaron Donald and will keep trying to extend the 4th year player.
Let’s remember that Tavon Austin was signed to a significant extension last season that he hasn’t lived up. Next year he will become expendable, as he would “only” count for $8,000,000 against the cap, and there are other players more fundamental to the core of this team that will seek an extension, names like Alec Ogletree, Trumaine Johnson, SAMMY WATKINS (there, I said it) have more impact in the team system than the former 8th overall.

Over the course of the last three seasons, the #33 worn by former Rams undrafted free agent E.J.Gaines. Gaines traded to the Buffalo Bills for the Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins.
Tomorrow afternoon, the number 33 jersey worn by another rookie undrafted free agent, Rams running back, Justin Davis. Davis requested the change after he informed of making the Rams 53-man roster. When asked, why for the change, it all boiled down from the request of one particular person, his mother.
Davis mother expressed she was unaware of the fact that running backs could wear a #40 number. She was under the impression that running backs could only wear numbers in the 20’s and 30’s. Davis informed his mother that NFL running backs are permitted to wear the numbers between 20 – 49 by the league rules commision
His mother and friends asked him to make the switch, something that he made possible. His family and friends said #42 didn’t look right on him. Now people are saying that #33 didn’t look right on him at this point. He informed them to give it a couple of weeks it’ll seem better.

Game Preview of Colts vs Rams
Rams Offense VS. Colts Defense
This game could really tell us a lot about where Jared Goff is going into the 2017 season, and not to mention the general state of the Los Angeles Rams.
The Colts defense was not very good last season, and they will be missing their best corner Vontae Davis, on game day. That means the Colts defensive line will have to generate a pass rush, or Rams recievers Sammy Watkins and Cooper Kupp, and not to mention the their talented young tight ends Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett can have a big game.
My biggest worry for the Rams is the right side of the O-line, where Jamon Brown and Rob Havenstein has struggled mightily in the pre-season. Will the Indy pass rush exploit that side of the line with overloaded blitzes? If they do , will it open up some big-plays for the Rams?
The next big question of course is which Todd Gurley we will see running the ball. Will it be the elite running back of 2015, or the pedestrian plodder we saw last season?

When you look at the Colts defense, you almost wonder whether the Rams have the opportunity to score 40 or more points.
But let's not forget this is a new offensive system with a suspected right side of O-line. So I'll play it safe and estimate that they will score somewhere between 27 to 34 points.

Colts Vs Rams Prediction
This is almost a "must win" for the Rams, as strange as that may sound.
If you can't beat a Colts team that is without their starting quarterback (Andrew Luck) , center (Ryan Kelly), and best cornerback (Vontae Davis), well, who can you beat?
The Rams are, of course, missing all-world defensive lineman Aaron Donald, but are otherwise mostly healthy. Wade Phillips aggressive, blitzing defense may be more than Scott Tolzien can handle, even with Donald not playing.
The Colts defense isn't one of the leagues better units even when healthy, and the absence of Vontae Davis at corner doesn't help. If the Rams lose this one, we could be looking at 4-12 or worse again. Fortunately, I don't think that will happen.
Prediction:
Rams 27 Colts 14

The Rams have brought in Jeremiah Poutasi and Cornelius Lucas to workout according to multiple sources.
Poutasi, a 23-year-old OG, was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2015 NFL draft by the Tennessee Titans, who would cut him a year and a half later via waivers after playing 11 games for them. Later on that year, the Jacksonville Jaguars would sign him to their practice squad, and will eventually promote him to their 53-man roster where he would log only one start, leading to his release this year.
Lucas, 25, is a UDFA from Kansas State who signed a three year $1,500,000 contract with the Lions in 2014 and managed to make the 53-man roster in each of those years before becoming an RFA, after playing 35 games (starting just six of them). The Detroit Lions signed him to an RFA contract back in April, and would not make the roster, making him an FA.
Both players have experience and would add essential and most needed depth in a thin OL that features aging experience on one side and inconsistency on the other.

The Los Angeles Rams waive defensive back Kevin Peterson this afternoon in efforts to place recently added Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback, Brandon Allen. Peterson becomes the second rookie undrafted free agent to make the Rams original 53-man roster and fourth player overall to be waived in recent days.
Rams added offensive linemen J.J. Dielman, Aaron Neary, and defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson as waiver claims yesterday and added Allen this morning. Also released were Johnny Mundt, Louis Trinca-Pasat, and Nic Grigsby.
Trinca-Pasat was resigned to the teams practice squad this afternoon after he cleared and the Rams released wide-receiver Nelson Spruce with an injury settlement.
Peterson played well in a crowded defensive backfield, where the talent was so competitive, the Rams were willing to deal E.J. Gaines to the Buffalo Bills for wide-receiver Sammy Watkins. Peterson was a good corner that had the ability to play press coverage, something that Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips expected in his defense. Another bright spot of Peterson, he was never shy to come and hit and tackle.
I'm optimistic that Peterson is able to clear waivers and be back with the team's practice squad in the upcoming weeks. He is definitely an added piece to our defense in the weeks to come.

The Los Angeles Rams claimed Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Brandon Allen from waivers today adding the third quarterback to the roster. It rumored the Rams were going to re-sign Dan Orlovsky after week one but thought twice about the situation.
Allen was a sixth-round draft choice of the Jaguars in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Arkansas. The Jags were hoping to place on him on the practice squad but the Rams put a claim for him late yesterday. This may answer the question of only why nine was added to the practice squad. Rams release Johnny Mundt and the expectations they will use that for Mundt.
Rams pick up a quarterback who can really throw the ball around the field. Not certain, but it seemed the Rams gave backup Sean Mannion a lot of playing time as if they were auditioning him for the other teams across the league. It once was rumored that he could potentially be traded, if this is part of a contingency plan, the front office played it straight.
The Rams will have to make another roster move to make room for Allen, and scrambling will begin on who will be sacrificed.

The Los Angeles Rams claimed J.J. Dielman, the cousin of the four-time Pro-Bowl guard of the San Diego Chargers. Rams are optimistic that Dielman's genes have been passed down to the younger cousin. Believe it or not, but when Dielman signed his letter of intent with the University of Utah, he only weighed 236lbs during recruiting. Shocking enough, he needed to gain more weight, something that was very difficult to achieve living in Phoenix, AZ. However, he managed to put on the necessary weight gain with muscle growth of some 65lbs, increasing his weight to 300lbs, standing 6-feet-5-inches tall.
Dielman was selected in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, by the Cincinnati Bengals. He initially was predicted as a late first round or an early second-round selection. However, his season was cut short due to a leg injury he sustained his senior year. He will injure himself against the University of Cal and MRI’s later determined his injury be season-ending.
The Bengals were well aware of his injury, and also knew his potential, and still manage to draft him with their #176th overall pick. Assuming his injury didn't heal as quickly as the Bengals expected, they waived him after the final 53-man rosters. The Rams claimed Dielman through the waiver process. Indeed, the Bengals were optimistic he become unclaimed so that they could develop him further on their practice squad. Sources reported that he was just beat out by a better competition of Alex Redmond.
Claiming Dielman, inserts him right on the Rams 53-man roster, as he will give depth and help to an offensive line that's already slim. The jury is still out with the right side of the Rams starting offensive line of Jamon Brown and Rob Havenstein. The two hasn't looked very fluent since week one of the pre-season, and simply Rams offensive line coach Aaron Kromer has done about as much as he possibly can from a coaching perspective. It's merely the talent and good mechanics by the two players to want to become and play better.

JJ Dielman's Senior Season At Center
I believe the Rams have made the right choice by claiming Dielman. They are getting a very versatile and athletic offensive lineman who has a very high football I.Q., high feet, is agile, and can block extremely good. When asked by his ex-collegiate coach at the University of Utah, this is how ex-coach Kyle Whittingham described him about his past consistent performer.
"His work ethic is phenomenal," he said. "He's just a prototypical offensive lineman. He's got the size, the strength, the mentality, the footwork. Moreover, he's just a junior, that's the best part about him."
Dielman's versatility of able to play all over the line, recently at the tackle and center positions, he will help a Rams line that has not been very good and decimated with injuries over the years. In the video footage above, you see his ability to move around, as well as his awareness on the field. As a run blocker, the defender almost disappears when Dielman engages contact. He has an excellent knack for backside pressure where he can help when uncovered.

JJ Dielman's Junior Highlights At Tackle
Above is footage of Dielman highlights as a right tackle. Again, you can observe his great awareness, footwork, and strength. His most significant upside here is that Aaron Kromer can enjoy his ability to pass block and the quickness of his hands. Being tall, stout, and athletic, he's probably can be the answer to the right guard position.
Dielman once asked of what was his favorite position he enjoys playing on the line, without hesitation, he would answer playing the center position. If the Rams are looking for him to become the future at that position, we have to think where will Aaron Neary play, whom they've also claimed. Also to include, the Rams added rookie Jake Eldrenkamp, undrafted lineman to the practice squad, someone else they had the intention of playing that position.
The Rams will play their home opener next Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Already being reported that the Colts will be without starting quarterback Andrew Luck, and potentially starting center Ryan Kelly. Also, starting defensive back Vontae' Davis was ruled out against Rams this afternoon as well, leaving a massive hole of their secondary to be filled. Nonetheless, this will not be the first time the Rams faced an injured brittle team and still walked away losing. They will take this game as dangerous as Scott Tolzien is Andrew Luck.

J.J. Dielmans Week 4 Pre-season Highlight
Dielman played his last preseason game against the Colts where he did an ok job. In at the center spot, first, play opened up a nice hole on a switch blocking assignment for running back Jarveon Williams to gain about 15 yards on the run. Pass block was functional, however when he got in open space seemed to look a bit lost. Indeed, Coach Kromer can fix that problem. Another play was a screen outside where he had to pull and get out in front, in which he did excellent cutting down the pursuing linebacker.
We have seen what in store for Dielman because I can look at the signs of his big cousin Kris Dielman coming out of him on the field.

The Los Angeles Rams revealed their new 53-man roster yesterday. I rather have to say that there was some surprise from players that were cut from the roster. However, at the end of the day, it’s a business decision players didn’t no parts.
Prior to the waiver process, the front office made a few moves by acquiring Washington Redskin’s tight-end Derek Carrier from a trade. Shortly after the trade, it was announced that the Rams terminated the contract of veteran tight-end Corey Harkey.
Certainly several players made strong cases to make the team, but unfortunately, few were caught up in the number’s game. Still collecting thoughts of a few players that were released, particularly of rookie offensive lineman Jake Eldrenkamp. The team decided to keep only eight linemen on the active roster, something outside of the normal.
Second-year linebacker Josh Forrest, another player that played well in the pre-season was released too. Forrest was returning from a season-ending knee injury that he sustained in 2016. It appeared he was injured against the Packers and waived due to injury.
Running back Aaron Green who was expected to be the third back on the depth chart, simply was overshadowed by undrafted rookie running back Justin Davis. Green was recovering from hand surgery and never was able to get the reps on the field.
No bigger surprise than defensive back Mike Jordan, who was released simply because two other defensive backs had better camps in Wade Phillips defensive scheme. Local kid Dominique Hatfield and Kevin Peterson both played well and were rewarded for their efforts. Rams General Manager Les Snead mentioned in yesterday press conference that the team has extended an invitation to Jordan welcoming him back to the teams practice squad.
Wide receivers Brandon Shippen and Paul McRoberts both looked great in camp and played well in pre-season, but just had too far much of depth at that position. Shippen had the strongest case in leading the team in receptions through the pre-season. McRoberts probably had the best camp since joining the Rams two seasons ago. We all remember the tragedy that struck his family last season on Hard Knocks, learning the death of his step-brother.
Last, Nelson Spruce seemed to never stay away from injuries to make a case for himself. It was ironic that this occurred two consecutive seasons, as Head Coach Sean McVay was not sacrificing a roster spot to hide Spruce injury again as Jeff Fisher last season. However, he cleared waivers and has been placed on the injured reserve.
The waiver process has initiated as Rams have claimed OL Austin Neary (Eagles), OL JJ Dielman (Bengals) and DL Quinton Jefferson (Seahawks).
Neary was on the practice squad of the Philadelphia Eagles last season and played collegiately at Eastern Washington University reuniting him with Cooper Kupp. Jefferson playing with the Seahawks had a season-ending knee injury in the third game of the season. Dielman the former All-PAC 12 lineman was drafted by Cincinnati Bengals in the fifth round. He suffered a foot injury as was cleared to play late in the preseason.
The three claimed players mean that the Rams will have to adjust the 53-man roster. Some disappointment may come today as we all wait to see who will be released. Those three players were TE Johnny Mundt, LB Nic Grigsby, and DT Louis Trina-Pasat
Full practice squad has been announced:
DT Omarius Bryant | Western Kentucky
OL Michael Dunn | Maryland
OL Jake Eldrenkamp | Washington
DB Isaiah Johnson | Georgia Tech
LB Cassanova McKinzy | Auburn
WR Paul McRoberts | Southeast Missouri State
FB Sam Rogers | Virginia Tech
OLB Carlos Thompson | Ole Miss
TE Travis Wilson | Utah
Reflecting back to the 53-man roster prediction, the players expected to make the practice squad have been placed. Good luck to them all, but I don't see all players are safe with trades on the arise now around the league.

The Los Angeles Rams claimed three players from waivers earlier today. Fifth round selection of the Cincinnati Bengals, JJ Dielman, Seattle Seahawks, Quinton Jefferson DT, and undrafted free agent from the Philadelphia Eagles, Aaron Neary OL, were added to the Rams roster.
The Rams needed to make corresponding moves, in which they did by waiving defensive lineman Louis Trina-Pasat, linebacker Nic Grigsby, and Johnny Mudnt. All three players were surprises to make the Rams 53-man roster originally, but it seems as if the fate was set.
No bigger surprise of the three to make the team was the undrafted free agent tight-end Mundt from the University of Oregon. He had been hurt majority of the preseason, but was able to reach the end on a touchdown reception from Dan Orolsvy in the final pre-season game.
Expect for each of these player to be signed to practice squad barring they clear waivers.

My Thoughts On The Rams Final Preseason Cuts
With the final roster cuts of the 2017 preseason announced on Saturday, I would say there weren't too many major shocks among the decisions made by the Los Angeles Rams.
I was slightly surprised by a couple of moves, however.
I thought linebacker Josh Forrest, the former sixth-round pick out of Kentucky had a real chance to stick in view of the switch to a 3-4 defense. Forrest saw some playing time last year before suffering an ACL injury that ended his season. I thought he played well in a limited role last year, but the preseason emergence of Nic Grigsby and the apparent decision to keep Mark Barron, the former safety, at linebacker may have sealed Forrest's fate, at least for now.
Don't be surprised to see him back on an NFL roster at some point.
At running back it looks like Justin Davis, the free-agent out of USC showed the coaching staff enough to land a roster spot despite some fumbling concerns. Davis offers more of a breakaway threat than fellow backup Malcolm Brown, although Brown actually had a decent preseason. Former Dallas Cowboys running back Lance Dunbar enters the season on the PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) list, and his future with the team seems uncertain at this point.
When the Rams signed him earlier this year many observers saw him as a third-down back and primary backup to starter Todd Gurley.
A guy I thought had a chance to stick at wide receiver, former Baylor star K.D. Cannon, was also among the cuts announced on Saturday, although I understand he may be signed to the practice squad. Cannon has been timed at 4.42 in the forty yard dash and had a productive college career at Baylor.
However, he also played in what considered a "simple" offense under former Baylor Coach Art Briles, with receivers able to essentially take plays off and not being asked to block.
Cannon had previously been cut by the Jets and 49ers, but his speed and college numbers make him an interesting player who may be heard from again, either with the Rams or someone else. Also getting cut at wide receiver was fan-favorite Nelson Spruce, the former University of Colorado star. A knee injury suffered in the 2016 preseason kept him from getting on the field last year, and the team once again designated him as injured when he was cut on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the cut of Shakier Ryan presumably means Tavon Austin will be back returning punts again this year. Austin, by the way, needs to have a big season in 2017 to shake the "bust" label that many have attached to the former West Virginia star and justify his huge salary.
One other surprise cut, at least for me was cornerback Mike Jordan, who I thought had a very good preseason. You can add him to the ''We haven't heard the last of him" list as well, in my opinion.

The Los Angeles Rams lost 24-10 to the Green Bay Packers in a game that was quite un-entertaining, to say the least. Expecting much from the team when the starting offensive and defensive units were not suited, must be out the equation. The game is played merely for coaches to take observe players that’s on the bubble or providing playing time for many who will never play the game again.
There were a few bright spots in yesterday's game, on both sides of the ball. Despite the Packers dominating the flow of the game, chewing up the clock before scoring, however, there were a few players who stood out in the game.

Mundt lined up at fullback, motioned left and ran into the flats when Orlovsky would hit him on a quick strike. Mundt caught the ball, quickly turned up the field and then barrel right through Packers safety Josh Jones. Perhaps one of the best drive of the game, which was helped with a couple of Packers penalties. Mundt was greeted by Rams quarterback Jared Goff and head coach Sean McVay when arrived at the sideline congratulating him for his performance.
Davis finished the game with 17 carries for 55 yards, two receptions for 21 yards, as Mundt had two receptions for 24 yards and one touchdown.
Not to leave out the honorable mention, but, wide-receiver Brandon Shippen was targeted eight times hauling in seven catches for 58 yards to lead all receivers.

On the defensive side of the ball, Dominique Hatfield continued to impress the coaching staff. He would deflect a pass intended for a Packers receiver, by swiping quickly at the ball as the receiver was about to make the reception.
Last season UDFA linebacker Nic Grigsby was all over the field as he would show defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, he was keeping his roster spot. On the ensuing kickoff, after a Rams field goal, Grigsby would deliver a hard hit on a Packers returner as the defensive unit celebrated with him after the tackle. Grigsby had a career night in tackles as he registered 10 tackles with seven being solo tackles.
A linebacker depth chart that has enormous talent, is very uncertain of Grigsby protection. Rams drafted two linebackers Ejuan Price and Samson Ebukam from the 2017 NFL Draft, also signing numerous undrafted ones too.
Folarin Orimolade one of the first original UDFA’s signed was released and brought by the Rams, played a sound game tonight. Despite missing a couple contains assignment, he still managed to disturb the Packers run game. He finished the night with six tackles (four solos), and a couple of quarterback hurries.
Last of them all, defensive lineman Casey Sayles. It was a player who certainly will be caught up in the numbers game. Casey had to two tackles, one solo and one for a loss. However, it’s the small things that don’t show up in the stats column that he was able to achieve tonight. Sayles gap penetration was impressive but also calls a little disturbance of the Packers officer blocking assignments. He played well enough when given the opportunity to at least have the coaching staff to think twice. He will end up on someone’s practice squad after the waiver process, but if not, consider the Rams to sign him to their practice squad.
So now it’s the waiting game of some 37 players who will have to sit and wait to get that call, “coach want’s to see you, bring your playbook.” No player is safe doing this process, as veterans can easily be released for one of the young players who may get picked up after cuts.
On Saturday afternoon, by 1:00 PM PST, all teams must have a roster of 53 players from the 90 they have at this point. I’m just as eager to see which and how many receivers do the Rams carry, and the secondary, who will be the fortunate ones to make the cut.

NFL Teams across the league are preparing to finalize their final 53-man rosters, that will take time to sort out through the film, coaches decisions, and opinions, and play the role of tough love. The Los Angeles Rams prepare for the exact process, as nearly 35 players will need to be cut, as some will never play the game again.
I will give you my prediction on how the Rams roster may look tomorrow from the offensive side of the ball.
Quarterbacks (2): Jared Goff (starter) Sean Mannion (backup)
For the second season in a row, in my opinion, Sean Mannion only played better than all the quarterbacks in the preseason. Jared Goff had a stellar performance against the Oakland Raiders with a passing rating over 100.
But, his very next game against the San Diego Chargers he seemed to have lost touch one game prior. Nonetheless, Goff will get the nod at the starting quarterback position, but if he slips, no question Mannion will be a summons.
Cut: Dan Orlovsky

Running-backs (3): Todd Gurley (starter) Malcolm Brown, and Justin Davis.
Todd Gurley had some flashes of his 2015 rookie season in this pre-season, and all I have to say is he looked eager, ready, and happy to play in this offense.
I previously reported that Aaron Green would be the fourth back to make the roster, but he was waived earlier this afternoon. Therefore, the UDFA rookie running back Justin Davis from USC has outplayed Green. Green recovered from a surgery, so it wasn’t fair play, but don’t rule Green out as returning to the practice squad. Malcolm Brown solidified the backup role early in training camp, and it will tough for Davis to move him from that role, but time will tell.
Running Back Leonard Tillery never had the opportunity to run the ball, as he was an extra camp body. However, he is a good back, someday he'll be on the active roster, but just need to be given a chance.
Cut: Leonard Tillery and Aaron Green – Lance Dunbar (PUP)
Fullback (1): Sam Rogers
Sam Rogers is that special fullback that can be used in a variety of ways. As a quarterback in high school, converted to running back and tight-end at Virginia Tech, Coach Sean McVay can use him a weapon in the red zone. Able to watch him open up holes on iso’s calls, the running backs really benefited from the fullback. The only competition Rogers had was Zack Laskey, but he was waived shortly after suffering an injury in training camp. The future is bright for this kid, don’t take your eye off of him, especially on special teams.
Receivers (7): Sammy Watkins, Tavon Austin, Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, Josh Reynolds, Pharoh Cooper, Brandon Shippen
For years the Rams had been trying to find themselves a number one receiver until a few weeks ago, pulling off the unexpected trade. For years trying to find the caliber of a Torrey Holt, they traded defensive back E.J.Gaines to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for their all-pro receiver Sammy Watkins. Watkins has not excited the fans as much on the field, but they know it’s coming.
Watkins joins a Rams team that already signed his partner in crime in Buffalo, teammate and fellowed receiver, Robert Woods. Woods averaged pre-season play, but he will be that receiver to make those tough and hard third-down catches. The Rams receiver core hasn't played together entirely, because of injuries to Tavon Austin. Austin needs off-season surgery to his wrist, as well with issues to his hamstring. The training staff has said he's 100% and will be ready to play week one against the Indianapolis Colts.
Reviewing the rookie receivers Cooper Kupp and Josh Reynolds; both receivers have played well this preseason, each able to find the end zone. Kupp is the new fan favorite in Los Angeles, as he doesn’t--well won't drop any passes whether he's in traffic, or the pass is out of his range, he still manages to make the catch.
The fans have fallen in love with the play of Reynolds, who can stretch the field vertically. Reynolds not only had a game-winning touchdown against the Raiders but followed up the next week with another touchdown reception against the San Diego Chargers. Before making the touchdown catch against the Chargers, he was hammered hard by a Charger safety and held on to pick up the first down.
Pharoh Cooper in the absence of Kupp, played well against the Raiders, getting leveled by a Raider's safety on a middle third and long, extending the final drive. The next following week against the Chargers, Cooper was as advertised, hauling in catch after catch.
With the release of running back Aaron Green, it is my opinion that the Rams adds an extra receiver or offensive lineman with the extra player. I'll reach for the ladder, and bet it all that they will use it for the additional receiver.
Paul McRoberts and Brandon Shippen have both excelled, not only at training camp but in the pre-season games too. However, I give the nod to Shippen, who in my opinion, looked more polished in his routes as well as catching the ball. He managed to find at least one reception in each of the four pre-season games. He led all receivers in receptions and yardage last night against the Packers proving he needed on this team. Good contributor on special teams, and well can be utilized as a defensive back if needed. McRoberts is there but, I believe McRoberts earned a spot on the practice squad, where he will see action on the active roster some point this season.
Nelson Spruce who was last season fan favorite, can’t stay healthy. For the second consecutive season, his pre-season play is cut short due to an injury. Against the Dallas Cowboys, Spruce made a couple of catches but hurt leg in the Raider game. Shakier Ryan was mainly used as a return man, couldn’t get the snaps at the receiver spot, as KD Cannon was in the same predicament too. Cannon returned a kickoff, and was targeted once, but just not afforded the opportunity to show what he can do on the field. Primarily it's not his fault, but with this kids speed, it is unfortunate he will be released and hopefully signed to the practice squad.
Lastly, receiver Mike Thomas, who reportedly was quite impressing to the coaching staff, having a high camp, but it all had to come to abrupt end. Thomas was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the regular season, for violating the league's drug policy. Spruce and Thomas can is trade bait, hopefully, get late round draft picks for the both.

Tight Ends (3): Tyler Higbee, Gerald Everett, Travis Wilson
Despite the few drops, I believe that Higbee has sustained the starting position at tight end. A huge target at 6’5” can kill the defenses in the red zone. However, better not slip up, because right on his heels is the rookie sensation tight-end Gerald Everett. Everett will poise as a nightmare against most defenses because of his size and speed. Very athletic with great hands, need to get more comfortable with the system, and when he does, uh---H-E-L-L-O Houston, we have a takeoff.
The most significant surprise is Rams adding Travis Wilson, the 6’7” converted quarterback to tight-end, who looked excellent when given the opportunity. I will reflect back to the game against the Packers, where a pass was thrown behind him and was expected to land out of bounds. Wilson’s long frame, he was able to spin around and extend every bit of his 6’7” body and snatch the ball before it landed on the turf. It was such impressive that not only did it get the attention of quarterback coach Greg Olson, and tight end coach Shane Waldron, but also Coach McVay showed excitement from the catch. He nodded his head toward Matt Lafleur, the Rams offensive coordinator as if yes, that's our guy.
Corey Harkey's time as a Ram seems to have it welcomed worn out in Los Angeles. One of the last remaining Fisher players didn’t quite look as if he was a perfect fit for this offense. Releasing Harkey, the Rams also can save about one-million toward the cap which will help some freeing up for other players. Hemingway out on injury, perhaps if he clears waiver, he will be a player to be the call back at a later date.

Andrew Whitworth OT (35 years old) chases down Melvin Ingram
The "Big Uglies," what I refer to the offensive lineman, is the players that get down and dirty to protect the quarterback and open up tunnels for the running backs to run through.
It gets no better than a 35-year-old veteran left tackle Andrew Whitworth, who seems to have the secret of the Fountain of Youth. The same player who played over 800 snaps and only allowed one sack in four years says a little. But when you get this same player, that attempts to chase down a linebacker some seventy plus yards, trying to prevent a touchdown, HE is the leader of your team.

Offensive Lineman (9): Andrew Whitworth, Roger Saffold, John Sullivan, Jamon Brown, Rob Havenstein, Austin Blythe, Andrew Donnall, Jake Eldrenkamp, (Player TBA via trade or Waiver Claim)
The left side of the offensive line is primarily the pass protector side, with tow linemen who seem to compliment each other much. Roger Saffold and Whitmore play as if they played together for years. The more significant concern of the offensive line is the right side, the predominant run side of the line. Jamon Brown and Rob Havenstein listed as the starters, but in many eyes, the jury is still out on the two linemen. They’ve shown shades of success, but the majority of the times, they’ve been pushed back or unable to sustain the blocks.
When inserting the reserves into the game, it hasn’t faired any better. Pulling out Brown and Havenstein and plugging in Cody Wichmann (we'll address him later), Alex Kozan, and Michael Dunn, as run blockers, they looked ok. However, Parker Collins and Pace Murphy, and Darrelle Williams struggled time after time with the pass blocking assignments. Williams, on the other hand, seemed a bit better than he did last season, but he still leaves that sour taste in the mouth.
The Rams used a six-round selection on Wichmann, in my opinion, I felt it was a steal, but when lined up against competition my stomach turns. In week two, the Rams played the Raiders, in which I had the luxury to video the line in slow-motion, hoping to see who was missing their assignments, getting beat, or destroyed. View the video yourself, and determine his success.

If you were able to follow the video and view the left guard, you will see that Wichmann is manhandled by a smaller defensive lineman. This has been the issue with the Rams line last season that brought negative comments from Todd Gurley's mouth.
Andrew Donnal has been hampered by injury this entire pre-season. When healthy, he gives the Rams a better chance at protecting the quarterback as well as run support. He has not been able to get on the field, but when there he is a solid back up.

Rams more than likely will use at least half of the practice squad players on the offense. Some of the players just ended up in the numbers games. Let's take a look at the players returning as practice squad players:
Potential Practice Squad Players
Micheal Dunn (OT)
Johnny Mundt (TE)
KD Cannon (WR)
Lenard Tillery (RB)
Paul McRoberts (WR)

Rounding out the 53-man roster from the defensive side of the ball became entirely of a headache. Contract negotiation looming around from the Aaron Donald side for his extension makes it a bit difficult. However, just going to remain optimistic that the two parties have agreed, and move forward with the direction of the team.
Defensive Line (6): Aaron Donald, Michael Brockers, Tanzel Smart, Ethan Westbrook, Morgan Fox, Tyrunn Walker.
I will roll with six down linemen just because with a Robert Quinn and Ethan Westbrook’s versatility; they can play several positions. Westbrook has played well at that 3-technique and athletic enough to move across the line. The emergence of rookie Tanzel Smart and solid play of Walker snubs out Louis Trinca-Pasat, but he will be back.
Cut: Louis Tinga-Pasat, Casey Sayles, Mike Purcell, Omarius Bryant
Line Backers (8): Alec Ogletree, Mark Barron, Robert Quinn, Connor Barwin, Cory Littleton, Samson Ebukam, Josh Forrest, and Bryce Hager
Switching to a 3-4 scheme a lot of talent had became overshadowed with linebackers and defensive back. Linebacker core of returning starters of Barron and Ogletree is solid, but how well Quinn adapt to the new scheme. Quinn will be a nightmare in standup but can be used to put his hand in the turf. Addition of veteran Barwin gives a solid four linebackers and to round it out with returners Hager, Forrest, and Littleton. Ebukam finally healthy was able to show the speed and power he had in Eastern Washington.
Hager has a very short rope in which a couple of players could have quickly taken his spot on the roster. Nic Grigsby played well; I instead have to say I was more impressed with him than last season. Matt Longacre, I had to give it some thought, but I believe he will be back soon. Ejuan Price just not enough to sustain a roster position, but will be a practice squad player. Carlos Thompson suffered an ankle injury, and its terrible see where his status will lie, at this point, he’ll probably be on the IR.
Cassanova McKinzy, Andy Mulumba, Kevin Davis and Folarin Orimolade, all made some current cases, but just not enough. As Willie Mays III and Davis Tull joined the team late didn’t have the opportunities to show their skills.

*** Many probably thinking why Mike Jordan was released and signed to practice squad and not Countess. Countess is a very versatile defensive back who can play in the slot, outside and the safety position. He excels on the special teams too.
