At Parkersburg High, Strange played tight end and defensive back and was a two-time team captain. In his senior year, he recorded 65 passes for 1,083 yards and eight touchdowns (school record) and added 65 (10 tackles for loss), six sacks, and three interceptions. During his junior year, he collected 95 tackles (nine for loss) and three defensive touchdowns; he recorded 57 receptions for 938 yards and 12 receiving touchdowns.
