Player Bio: J.R. Reed attended Prestonwood Christian in Frisco, TX, and the son of former NFL receiver Jake Reed. He started both ways a Prestonwood Christian at receiver and safety. In his senior year, he made 18 receptions for 308 yards and three touchdowns as a receiver and combined 53 tackles (three tackles for loss) and five interceptions with three touchdown returns. Reed earned honors to the All-District First-Team, and an All-State Second-Team​

Strengths: Good genetic blood that flows through his body shows up well on the playing field. His cerebral knowledge of the game processes well while reading the receiver's routes, such as screenplays. He rarely will get beat deep as he can keep the pass in front of his defensive coverage. Will come up on run support and take on blocks to make tackles. He has excellent closing speed from the secondary to make tackles or break on passes. High awareness will show in short-yardage and red-zone possessions.

Weaknesses: He does not match up against the speedy slot receivers. There are concerns with his tackling ability, he is not a thumper, and his technique is irregular. He does not disengage off of block well, no matter the size of the offensive player. His physical play does not jump out at on film. His backpedaling is fair; however, he seems tight in the hips when needing to change the direction. He will need to add weight and strength to last as a box safety at the next level.​
