Todd Gurley: Like A Kid On The Playground

The Los Angles Rams running back Todd Gurley, playing in his third season, is having a phenomenal season thus far. In fact, he’s actually looking as if he’s having a lot of fun on the field early in this 2017 football season. His body language, or better yet his swag, as the new generation calls it, display the tone that he’s loving the Rams rookie head coach Sean McVay’s offense.

Gurley numbers have been impressive this season, as he was able to eclipse for the first time after 20 consecutive games, going over 100 yards rushing. This mark dated back to the end of his 2015 rookie season. He didn’t shortchange himself last Thursday night, as his epic performance that night of 28 carries for 113 yards, five receptions for 36 yards, and scoring three touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving.

Coming off a disappointing loss to the Washington Redskins in week two, Gurley commented that last season team would have given up being down by 17 points early in the game. However, it seemed as if he owed the Ram fans for a costly fumble he gave away deep of the Rams side of a field allowing the Redskins score.

Gurley has taken charge of this Rams offense by putting it on his shoulders and help to engineer the Rams team on scoring some 41 points, and scoring over 40 points the second time of this season.

Todd Gurley’s TNF Color Rush Highlights

On that night, Gurley clearly looked like a kid playing on the playground. He’s running the ball more aggressively, the bounce is back in his steps, as well as he’s even bounced a couple of runs that were designed inside to outside gaining additional yardage.

Gurley is trusting his offensive line now, especially the right side that is anchored by Jamon Brown and Rob Havenstein. Between the two, they were able to open up nice size holes as Gurley having consistent five-yard gains with first down carries.

Which brings me to the left side of the line, other than the one sack that Roger Saffold was beaten on, the left side held it down. Andrew Whitmore added another game and downs to his plateau of not allowing any quarterback sacks of Ram quarterback Jared Goff.

But lets, not count out the small things that Gurley been able to afford to the Rams offense, his pass blocking capabilities I witnessed numerous of plays where I see a 49er defender that was pursuing free to the quarterback, as Gurley was there saving sacks with from pass blocking skills. Last season, just tally up Goff sacked at least six times in a game.

After the game, Gurley was on the set for a post-game interview with NFL analysts Rich Eisen, Hall of Famer’s Michael Irvin, Marshall Faulk, and ex-coach Steve Mariucci, whom asked Gurley questions in regards to the  Rams remarkable victory and if he see this team’s early accomplishment,  if they can make it to the postseason playoffs and win a Super Bowl.

Gurley answered with humbleness, but as the questions surrounding next week’s game against Michael Irving’s old team, the Dallas Cowboys, Gurley gave Irving an earful of..... well just watch below.

Todd Gurley Post Game Promise to Michael Irvin

Gurley’s response caught Irving off guard and all parties of the interview, who laughed off the humor of Gurley’s toward Irving. To say the least, a happy Gurley early is the success of the Rams offense, as well as the energy from Coach McVay, this young Rams team has peaked early, and continued to play great together from a great nucleus.

On the other side of the ball, the Rams defense, which once was the forefront of the team,  haven't look that great against the opposing offenses. The Washington Redskins ran the ball down their throat, as the San Francisco 49ers not only scored their first touchdown of the season, but they scored almost at will with a balanced run and passing game.

The 49ers veteran wide receiver Pierre Garcon made several great catches against the Rams defense and was able to get free on a deep pass reception, beating Trumaine Johnson. However, Johnson kept Garcon from scoring, something he was accustomed to doing, throughout his career against the Rams.

Sitting next to me on my flight is a Dallas Cowboy fan, he asked me how did I feel about the game coming up against the Cowboys on Sunday. I basically told him, if the defense can contain the Cowboy’s run game, and pound Ezekiel Elliot every time he touches the ball, I love our chances of blowing out the Cowboys at the AT&T Stadium.

The passenger responded back to me by saying that he was in agreement, with no run game, our Rams offense is too high octane for the Cowboys defense. He also stated that he was a huge Wade Phillips (Rams defensive coordinator) fan, and was not happy when Jerry Jones fired him some seven years ago. But, he also mentioned that our offense scares him and that we may score 50 on the Cowboys.

Cowboys wipe out big deficit in road win vs. Rams https://t.co/2r7xUMieZ9

— Edward Henderson (@Pi_Double_i) September 30, 2017
The Rams look to avenge a loss they suffered to the Cowboys a few seasons ago after they controlled the first half. The Rams had an early 21-0 lead over the Cowboys in St. Louis, to only have to watch the Cowboys rally back in the second half to beat the Rams 34-31 at Edward Jones Dome. (Watch video click on the link above)

The Rams had missed opportunities of blowing the game wide open as poor execution and concentration lead to the team’s disappointment. Midway in the third quarter, on fourth down and inches at the Cowboys nine-yard line, instead of kicking a field goal to go up by seven, Jeff Fisher risked going for the first down. However, Cowboys linebacker Anthony Hitchens had better thoughts as he crashes into the backfield and stops Rams running back Zac Stacey for a 2-yard loss.

Next Rams miscue came early in fourth quarter when quarterback Austin Davis, threw a pass to tight end Jared Goff in the end zone as he bobbled the attempted catch three times before it landed on the turf. Moments after the drop, Davis attempted to help pick up Cook's spirit, but not a wise idea, Cook was seen pushing Davis out the way leading to a sideline scuffle with defensive lineman William Hayes.

Cowboys will score on a touchdown pass from Tony Romo to Terrence Williams to take the lead, and the very next possession, Davis throws a pick-six interception to Bruce Carter to increase the Cowboys lead to 10 points. Davis will find an Austin Pettis in the end zone for a touchdown to cut the Cowboy lead to three points.

The difference between those Rams and this season Rams is they have a better running back in Gurley, a better quarterback than Davis, and a better coaching staff.  Gurley is having fun on the playground, it may just recess for the Cowboys defense, especially if middle linebacker Sean Lee is unavailable to play. If Gurley gets loose such as he has the last couple of games, he may ride off into the sunset on the Cowboy horses.

WorldWide Rams

Picture
The Los Angeles Rams face their biggest test of the 2017 season on Sunday when they visit Dallas for a showdown with one of the teams considered a Super Bowl contender in the NFC. This game may tell us a lot about whether the Rams are a playoff pretender or contender in 2017.

Rams Defense vs Cowboy Offense
The Rams biggest problem area so far in 2017 has been the rush defense, and it will be sorely tested on Sunday by Dallas running back Ezekiel Elliot, playing behind one of the league's elite offensive lines. A big day by Elliot likely spells victory for Dallas. If the Rams can keep him under control they have a chance. Holding him to 8 yards rushing, as Denver did a couple of weeks ago probably isn't realistic. But anything under 80 yards on the ground would be a victory. I'm somewhat less concerned with the Dallas passing game. Based in his numbers so far this year, calling Dez Bryant an average receiver is probably being kind. The Rams secondary hasn't been great, but it looks like Kayvon Webster will play, which is good news. I'm hoping we get LaMarcus Joyner back as well. Dak Prescott can beat you with his arm--but I'm far more worried about Zeke.

Rams Offense Vs Cowboy Defense
Call me crazy, but I really think the Rams can move the ball against these guys. Dallas's secondary certainly isn't all that. Their pass rush could be a problem, especially against the right side of the Rams O-line. Havenstein and Brown have been better up front recently than in the pre-season, but it's still a concern. Todd Gurley is a major factor here. If he can have a big day it will settle down the Dallas pass rush and keep the ball out of the hands of their offense. Last time I checked it still wasn't certain Sammy Watkins whether would play on Sunday. If not, maybe we will see what Josh Reynolds can do.

Special Teams
The Rams will have the advantage here IF Tavon Austin and Pharoah Cooper can hang onto the ball. That's been a problem, but let's hope the long week for the Rams has allowed them to fix this. The game could well hinge on the answer to that question.

Prediction
Oddsmakers say Dallas is roughly a 7.5 to 8.5 point favorite. They may be right. But I'm a Rams fan, and hope springs eternal.

Rams vs. Niners Preview

Overview

This game matches two of the bright young offensive minds in the NFL with Kyle Shanahan against Sean McVay. The two know each other well, as Shanahan hired McVay to be the Washington Redskins' Assistant Tight Ends coach in 2010 when Shanahan was Washington's offensive coordinator. Interestingly, the San Francisco 49ers are 3-19 over their last 22 games. However, they are 3-0 against the Rams. Los Angeles needs a win here to get back some of the mojos they had going after their opening victory over the Colts. So really, if you can't beat the Niners, who can help you overcome?
Rams Defense vs. 49ers Offense

The key here is whether the Rams can shut down Carlos Hyde and the 49er running game. That was the Achilles heel against Washington, and with a short week to prepare for this game it's hard to say whether the problems corrected since Sunday. I'm not a big Brian Hoyer fan. Stopping the Niners run game and avoiding turnovers are the keys to victory for the Rams, in my opinion. That means the LA outside linebackers need to set the edge on running plays and the Rams can't allow San Francisco to win the battle of the trenches, as Washington did on Sunday.
Picture

Rams Offense vs. San Francisco Defense

The Niners defense is not bad when healthy, but two key pieces will be missing Thursday night, with safety Eric Reid and rookie linebacker Reuben Foster injured. We saw flashes of the Todd Gurley of 2015 on Sunday, and the Rams will be looking to build on that again tonight. Rams tight end Gerald Everett, who scored on a 69-yard pass from Jared Goff, is not expected to play tonight, which is bad news for Los Angeles. However, the team's number one receiver, Sammy Watkins, and rookie Cooper Kupp, who seems to be Goff's go-to guy in a pinch, will be on the field.

Special Teams

Johnny Hekker and Greg Zuerlein are probably the best pairs of kickers in the league. I keep waiting for Tavon Austin to break a couple of punt returns. Will it be this week? Advantage Rams.

Final Comments

Why does it feel like a trap game for the Rams? San Francisco gave Seattle all they could handle on Sunday, they are playing at home, and they always play the Rams tough. A short week to prepare doesn't help, and these Thursday night games tend to get a little sloppy. All of that favors San Francisco. On the other hand, I think the Rams are a better team right now, especially on offense. If this turns into a shootout the Rams should win, a low-scoring slugfest favors the Niners. I'm going to say talent wins.

Expect Tavon Austin To Have Breakout Game

Ed "Pi Double i" Henderson

Picture
Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Tavon Austin, signed a $40 million contract extension last season, collecting just shy of $15 million this year. Austin has not lived up to that type of caliber receiver, earning that much salary. His extension has brought potentially in-house frustration of other player contract negotiations, and much tension of the Rams Nation.

Austin's 2017 season took a turn for the worse right at the start, as he required surgery to a wrist injury he sustained last season. After being cleared for training camp, he runs into another setback, a bad hamstring. His injuries escalated to the disappointment of many throughout the Rams organization. Trade demands started to be disseminated by fans, as well as just cut him; he's not worth the money. However, in the world of sports and contracts, its something that is not that easy to accomplished, especially with the size of his contract holds.

Tavon missed the entire pre-season games from his injuries, and as a precautionary that he'll be 100% healthy for the regular season play, he was held out for the final pre-season game after being cleared. Well, he's fully healthy at this point, but unfortunately, he hasn't found a rhythm nor the playing time in this new explosive Rams offense.

When the Rams traded for Sammy Watkins, Sean McVay plans were to utilize Austin as the deep threat in the offense. Unfortunately, after acquiring Watkins, the role now made Watkins as the deep threat, and plan of using Austin folded. The trade also pushed Austin down to no better than fourth on the receiver depth chart, behind rookie Cooper Kupp, veterans Robert Woods, and Watkins.

Tavon Austin Epic Day Against 49erss

Despite the limited role of Austin this season, expect for him to very active and productive in tonight's Color Rush game. Austin seems to have always shown up against the San Franciso 49ers throughout his career.  In eight games against the Niners, Austin rushed the ball 19 times for 114 yards, collected 27 receptions for 232 yards and a touchdown, and fielded 26 punt returns for 122 yards and three touchdowns.

Thought out his four-year career against the Niners, Austin could reach the end zone six times out of eight games, a statistic that you can't overlook.

Expect the 49ers to have their defensive attention on Todd Gurley and Sammy Watkins tonight. The Rams offense may become pass happy tonight, not that the 49ers front seven been the pivotal success to the team's defense, but the Niners secondary hampered with injuries. Veteran safety Eric Reid has already been ruled out, and safeties Jaquiski Tartt and Jimmie Ward are both questionable.

If Hart and Ward can't go, the Niners will have to play a pair of rookies, Chancellor James, and Lorenzo Jerome at the safeties position. During the pre-season, James appeared the better of the two, standing at 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, can come down and hit as an extra body in the box. The Niners will risk the inexperience of him if the Rams offense counters with play action passing.

Austin will play huge and help the Rams offense explode tonight against the 49ers at Levi Stadium. Levi Stadium has a high-speed field as Austin will get open deep, and use his speed on crossing routes.  Oh, by the way, the jet sweep, Austin has scored once against the Niners with that play, and another on a wide-receiver screen. That game was the last time the Rams have beaten the 49ers, 0-3 since that victory.

Nelson Spuce A Patriot?

The New England Patriots in desired need for receiver help, have brought in former Los Angeles Rams receiver Nelson Spruce for a workout. The Rams released Nelson when the 53-man roster finalized as he became a casualty to a list filled with healthy receivers.

Nelson never seemed to stay healthy in his short two-year stint with the Rams, as he was injured again doing preseason play.

Nelson became an immediate fan favorite in Los Angeles from one very game against the Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Rams played in front of 100,000 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Nelson caught a few passes to help the Rams rally back to beat the Cowboys.

Injuries to their receivers have decimated the Patriots, Julian Edelman tore his ACL in a preseason game against the Detroit Lions, Danny Amendola was inactive for the Patriots on Sunday against New Orleans Saints because of a concussion, and Malcolm Mitchell is out until week ten because of an undisclosed knee injury. Including to the injury bug, Rob Gronkowski is also nursing a groin pull he sustained against the Saints.

Spruces workout with the Patriots brings a sour taste to most Ram fans as they cringe at the sound of Tom Brady, Bill Belichick or New England Patriot. The talent level Spruce posses, and the Patriots sign him, barring an injury, Brady passing game will be for the elite.

Wishing Spruce all the luck, but, if he signs with the Patriots, it will become love and hate relationship.

Rams Activate Troy Hill to Roster

Rams defensive back Troy Hill served a two-game suspension imposed by the NFL for his arrest last season. Hill arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, after his Mercedes Benz, he was driving crashed into a big rig on the 101 freeway early morning.

An officer on the scene observed Hill be a bit disoriented and administered a field sobriety test in which subsequently led to his arrest. The arrest came hours just before Hill was to report to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, where the Rams were hosting the Miami Dolphins. Hill booked and released on $15,000 bail that he posted.

The Rams deactivated Hill for the game and later released him for the suspicion of his DUI arrest. However, days later, Hill will receive something that is flattering from the Rams, reinstatement to the team.

Troy Hill Thankful For Second Chance

Despite Hill's uncanny arrest last season, many aimed at the kid for his poor decision making off the field. I can admit, it disturbed me as well; however, we all entitled to second chances in life. Some can be critical of on the field challenges that Hill seems to lose, but you have to remember, the star defensive players have their opportunities of disappointment or poor play too.

Revamping last season in the home opener victory over the Seattle Seahawks, Hill was inserted in the game early in the second quarter after poor play from starting cornerback Coty Sensabaugh. The Seahawks picked on Hill first, where it seemed Hill made a clean pass deflection on a deep pass to Paul Richardson, but flagged for pass interference. Later, he would defend well to another deep pass attempt to receiver Doug Baldwin.

Later in the fourth quarter, Russell Wilson dropped back and launched a long pass down the sideline to one of the fastest men in the NFL, Tyler Lockett, beat Hill for a 53-yard reception. Hill managed to stay almost step for step with Lockett, nearly batted the ball away, but remained in position to make the tackle grabbing hold to Lockett's ankle.

Then came the Rams against the New York Giants at Twickenham Stadium in London, England, where Hill read the quick screen to one of the most exciting receivers Odel Beckham, and came up fast and leveled Beckham for a loss on the play.

Hill was an undrafted defensive back from the University of Oregon who was a star with the Ducks. Hill was a complete lockdown corner, return kicks, and great on special teams.

Many put doubts in a player because of early poor play but remember Ashanti Samuels for the New England Patriots when he first came to the league. He was picked on by everyone but turned out to be not only a pro-bowl corner but a Super Bowl Champion as well.

Good to see Hill back with the team, time to put silence to his critics and naysayers.

The Los Angeles Rams added cornerback Troy Hill to their active roster ahead of their week three matchup against the San Francisco 49ers after serving a two game suspension. Hill was arrested last season after leaving a club, fell asleep and hit a wrecked into a truck.

A few roster moves had to be made to create space for Hill on the roster. Cornerback Kevin Peterson was waived and practice squad linebacker Cassanova McKinzy's contract was terminated, in hopes that Peterson is not claimed by any other team and they can resign him to their available slot on the practice squad.

WE RUN LA!

Ed "Pi Double i" Henderson

WorldWide Rams

Picture
In a stadium that was visibly dominated by red jersey’s, the Washington Redskins sent a massive statement to the Los Angeles Rams fan base on who RAN Los Angeles. It practically seemed as if the Redskins were the home team, as where many may have thought USC was playing at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

The Redskins made a statement with the run game, as their offense rushed for 229 yards against what was expected to be a solid Rams defense. The Redskins handed the ball to three different running backs, in which all three nearly rushed for over 70 yards.

Redskins head coach Jay Gruden made it very clear that his offense was going to establish the run game, and wasn't going to let Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, dictate their offense. The Redskins offensive linemen exposed what was on this day, a weak Rams front seven of their defense.

It seemed as if they noticed a wrinkle in the defense, by overloading one side of the offensive line with outside toss plays. Once the Rams were able to find a solution to stop that part of the run game, the Redskins ran between the guards. Nothing was more embarrassing until running back Chris Thompson, burned the defense with a delayed draw play that he took the distance for a 61-yard touchdown run.

Chris Washington Rips Through Rams Defense

The touchdown couldn’t come at a worse time, as the Rams were able to get within three points just before the half ended. However, with 1:56 left in half, Thompson changed the Rams entire momentum by ripping through the defensive line and scoring on a 61-yard touchdown run. That touchdown helped increased the Redskins lead by 10 points, as the Rams needed to orchestrate a comeback in the second half.

However, the Redskins didn’t change up their game plan, as they continuously pounded the ball right at the Rams defense, gaining five yards per every carry. Able to view from the stadium seats,  it was very predictable of knowing what the next play called. Over and over on first down, there was a carry for five yards; second and five, a seven-yard gain for a Redskin's first down.

Next, the play action came in effect, as over and over, even after a sack or penalty, on third and long, Kirk Cousins threw a strike to a receiver on a delayed slant or to a back out the backfield to convert those long first downs time after time. It seemed as if the Redskins were playing with 13 on the field at times because the receivers or backs were left wide open.

Despite the numerous of flags thrown for penalties enforced against the Rams, they never seemed to give up in the contest, something that was a case with the last season team. The offense continued to execute plays getting themselves closer into scoring situations. The Rams tied the game up after Todd Gurley caught a pass out the backfield from Jared Goff and hurdled Redskin's defensive back Baushaud Breeland and dove in for the touchdown.

Rams will later score on a field goal with four minutes left in the game, on a drive that was nullified by two costly penalties on receiver Robert Woods and another penalty on right tackle Rob Havenstein. The Rams executed a well planned fake punt when Johnny Hekker threw a pass to receiver Josh Reynolds to pick up 28 yards for the first down, to the Redskin’s 14-yard line. The drive stalled as Greg Zuerline nailed a field goal to tie the score.

The Redskins on their very next possession, went back to the ground attack, executing first down after first down. On a third down and long, Cousin will cap off a ten play, 70-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown strike to Ryan Grant, who beat rookie Kevin Peterson for the go-ahead score.

Rams received the ball with 1:49 seconds left in the game and on the very first play of their possession, Goff stared down receiver Cooper Kupp, and linebacker Mason Watson intercepted his pass to seal the deal. The Redskin offense ran the ball a couple more times to run out the clock and secure the victory.

If the Rams learned anything about this game, it was the fact that the 3-4 defense is ineffective against certain teams such as the Redskins. Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree, in my opinion, seemed to be lost at times, didn't seem to play hard and not to execute entirely in the first half.

However, in the second half, he was able to turn it up a notch, by helping to slow down the run, but it was a little too late. He executed a perfectly timed blitz to the surprise of Cousin, at no avail, he had to cuddle up and take the sack.

This Thursday night, the Rams look to avenge an embarrassing loss they received from the San Francisco 49ers, on Monday Night Football, last season. The 49ers beat the Rams 28-0, as several Ram players lost their composures on the field, from a game that seemed to be a deja vu of yesterday.

Fights broke out on the field on what seemed to appear on an over aggressively tackle on the Niners quarterback Blaine Gabbert, from Alec Ogletree. Aaron Donald obtained an ejection from the game for apparently making contact with an official.

It initially seemed as if Donald was a peacemaker to help restore a happy environment. However, a replay will show that he grabbed Niners receiver Quinton Patton behind the neck, Patton responded aggressively toward Donald as pushing him in the face knocking his helmet off to the field. Blindly to Donald, an official tried to get the players separated, and Donald instincts were to brush his hand away making contact.

Aaron Donald's MNF Ejection

The Rams seemed to be humiliated by the Niners offense as they too ran the ball aggressively down their throat. The Rams didn’t have any answers to the run game and looked very confused with their defensive schemes in the first half. The Niners who had only two victories last season, ironically both were against the Rams, winning the second game in the final minute. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick engineered the fourth comeback with his arm and legs, winning the game on a two-point conversion diving into the end zone.

On a short week before the game, I’m sure the Rams defense will be like sharks in bloody water attacking the 49ers offense. In the fourth quarter after Donald's ejection, the 49er Faithful begin their "BEAT LA" chants over and over to the clock expired. Something I never will forget, sitting in the stands dazed as if it was a NIGHTMARE. Be certain that Donald and others have circled this date and have written the very word, "R-E-D-E-M-P-T-I-O-N," on their calendars for Thursday’s night edition football.

Rams Week One Grades

Picture
Quarterback

Jared Goff started his eight career game against the Indianapolis Colts. He previously lost seven consecutive games up to his next start. He didn’t get shortchanged on this day, as he received his first NFL win as a starting quarterback, in almost a flawless way.

Goff went 21-29 for 306 yards and didn’t turn the ball over. He would connect with seven different receivers with rookie Cooper Kupp lead all receivers with 76 receiving yard and TD. His placing the ball in areas on the receiver could catch if not a few got away from him late underthrowing the receivers.

However, for the first time, Goff looked like the number one overall quarterback the Rams had expected on draft day. It was great to watch him sit comfortably in the pocket and make his read and not get crushed by a defender. He will a little challenge with a much better Redskin defense this week, so let's remain optimistic his good play continues.

GRADE: A
Picture
Offensive Line

The acquisition of tackle Andrew Whitworth and center John Sullivan made a massive difference for the Rams offense. Where have the service of Aaron Kromer been for this Rams offensive line? The offensive line gave Goff nearly five seconds of protection per pass attempt. Great not seeing the like of former number two overall selections, tackle Greg Robinson (2014) and Jason Smith (2009).

The free-agency route didn’t fair well either, as the Rams lured Miami Dolphins veteran left tackle Jake Long to St. Louis. His season would be cut short from what appeared to be a freaked knee injury.  Rams quarterbacks have not look that comfortable in the pocket since the premier day of Orlando Pace. No question, Whitworth has looked very well protecting the blind side of Goff.

Despite the excellent pass protection, there were flaws of "bonehead" penalties and the suspected right side o-line. Whitworth and John Sullivan both had false start penalties, and Rob Havenstein had a costly holding penalty. However, guards Jamar Brown and Roger Saffold didn’t see any laundry flying in their direction. Run blocking from the right side needs to be able to hold their point of attack long enough for the backs to get through. Once that is figured out, the offense will be having much more fun over the course of the season.

GRADE: A-
Running-backs

The Rams running game didn’t give the fans something to wow about, except for Todd Gurley’s vintage hurdle of a Colts defender and his short touchdown rush. Other than that, the Colt’s defense added to the total games that Gurley held under 100 yards rushing. The streak extended to the total of 19 games at this point. However, he had a couple of runs nullified by penalties, which may have inched him closer to 100. Gurley offensive stats were 19 rushes for 40 yards and a touchdown, and seven receptions for 56 yards.

Malcolm Brown who solidified himself as Gurley’s back up celebrated the day with a short three-yard touchdown run. The touchdown run marks the first of his young NFL career and expects to be an exceptional back for Gurley.

GRADE: B+

Picture
Tight-ends

The tight-end play, well, let us say it needs improvement. Second-year tight-end Tyler Higbee collected a couple of foolish penalties. Rams were driving deep into their territory as Higbee would receive a false start penalty. Later, Todd Gurley will have a 12-yard run nullified by a holding penalty by Higbee too.

Gerald Everett With Magnificent Concentration

Rookie tight-end Gerald Everett had one reception against the Colts, but it was a great reception. Goff will find Everett match on a one-on-one against Colts linebacker Jon Bostic, as Everett will beat I’m on a wheel route up the sideline. However, what happens next, is how beautifully Everett made his only catch. Goff threw the ball the along the sideline as Everett created separation from Bostic. Everett dove out, and with high concentration, he makes a diving catch.

However, his youthfulness took center stage for a moment as he may have had an NCAA flashback after hitting the ground. He’ll pop up and looked as if he was satisfied with the play, and suddenly makes a move away from the defender who failed to touch while he was down. Everett took off toward the end-zone where it seemed as if he was scoring his first NFL touchdown. Everett will gain seven additional yards on a 39-yard reception and stopped at the five-yard line.

Excellent job from the rookie, but he must remember to fully adjust from the NCAA to the NFL as for a split second, hesitation may have indeed coasted him a touchdown. No question about this selection of general manager Les Snead and head coach Sean McVay, he’s advertised of great potential and talent in this league.

Receivers

The receiving core of the Rams did something that had been missing over the years, catching the football. Lead by rookie sensation Cooper Kupp (4 receptions for 76 yards and 1TD), four different receivers had catches, eight in total including the backs and tight ends.  Kupp made a tremendous one-handed catch and picked up additional yards by nicely placed pass by Goff.

Cooper Kupp's One-Handed Circus Catch

Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods were introduced to the Colts defense early by hauling in a few catches. Kupp makes a beautiful out-stretched one hand catch that was placed beautifully for a 24-yard reception, to showcase his great hands.

Tavon Austin played sparingly and only caught one pass for a seven-yard gain. Again, pointing out the fact that the Rams receivers were catching the balls and moving the chains. That was something the fans hadn’t witnessed since the glory days of the “Greatest Show On Turf.” Not that I’m comparing the two, just establishing the fact that passes completed and receivers were holding onto the football.

GRADE: A+
Defensive Line

It was no secret that the Rams all-pro defensive tackle Aaron Donald was not in the lineup, in fact, was not even on the 53-man roster. Donald who had held out some six-plus weeks for a contract extension returned to Rams practice facility on Saturday afternoon.

However, the game still would be played without Donald, as the Colts prepared to target what they thought was the Rams defensive line. The learned quickly that even without Donald in the field, that it was not going to be a cakewalk. In Donald's absent, the Rams would play both veteran lineman Tyraunn Walker and rookie Tanzel Smart. Walker seemed to have the better play of the two as he made some key stops against the run and creating one of the four sacks of Tolzien.

All eyes need to set on returning defensive lineman Ethan Westbrook. Westbrook made his presence be felt early in the game as he crashed the offensive line and tackled Frank Gore for a loss. Next, Westbrook nearly sacked Tolzien but still was able to cultivate him into the turf approximately. Later he attained his destiny by finally catching Tolzien in the backfield for the sack. The Colts offensive line must have overlooked Westbrook's talent as he continued to see causing disruptions in the backfield.

Linebackers

The Colts intention was to establish a run game early with Aaron Donald absent from the defensive interior line. However, that plan temporarily halted after being stopped on their first two attempts to follow by a pick-six interception.

Colts down 10-0 early in the first quarter, turned to their passing game. Tolzien went to his tight-end Jack Doyle for a 21-yard pass completion with Alec Ogletree on the coverage. Two plays later Colts found something in exposing Ogletree with another 20-yard completion to Doyle. Ogletree seemed to be caught out of position on both Doyle receptions but, buckled down after that last reception to shutout Doyle.

Robert Quinn playing in his first game as a linebacker looked like a veteran in his first game at that position. The highlight of Quinn's game, was when he rushed off the edge low and violently, blowing right pass tackle Anthony Castonzo, sacking Tolzien. Quinn appeared to be having fun out there at his new position, as he frequently was in the backfield.

Matt Longacre playing in his first opening season game took advantage of his opportunity by registering one sack and one tackle for a loss. Connor Barwin and Mark Barron had a relatively quiet game for both players.  Second-year linebacker was all over the field with a substantial third-down stop as well as on special teams. These linebackers will need to be ready for the Redskins next as they will establish a run game early.

 Defensive Backs

The defensive backs set the tone very early in the first quarter for the Rams and later in the third quarter as both Trumaine Johnson and LaMarcus Joyner each picked off quarterback Scott Tolzien for interceptions returns.

The defense needed to play a solid game because they were still missing their all-pro defensive tackle who had just returned from a contract dispute. The Colts tried to attack early with a couple of runs, and on a third and seven, Tolzien attempted to complete a pass to receiver T.Y. Hilton. Great defensive play of Johnson, read the route turned his head would intercept the pass running back for a touchdown.

In the third quarter, LaMarcus Joyner had his opportunity as he leaped high in the air to snatched down a pass intended again for Hilton, and took it to the house. It planned to be quite evident that the Rams were not going to let Hilton shred the defense.

Trumaine Johnson and LaMarcus Joyner Pick Sixes

Johnson not done, as he caused more havoc for the Colts offense, as he created a forced fumble and recovery, as Hilton tried to shake Johnson after a short pass reception. Hilton would pick up the first down, but a quick poke by Johnson caused the ball to squirt out as he pounced on top.

Kavon Webster, the starting corner, left the game early in the third quarter with an apparent shoulder injury but played well before exiting the game. Rookie undrafted free agent defensive back, Dominique Hatfield left the game with a concussion-related injury but was solid while on the field.

The secondary was able to minimize the Colts passing game with a combined total of 179 total receiving yards. The Colts gained 50 of those yards on a fourth-quarter pass by replacement quarterback Jacoby Brissett, hitting Donte Montcrief deep. Moncrief made a significant adjustment to the ball to beat reserve corner Blake Countess; the Colts would score a few plays later.

The defensive backs were flying all over the field batting down passes, hitting ball carriers, and of course, intercepting the football. The Rams will be optimistic that they continue to play with that same level of intensity when they play the Washington Redskins on Sunday.

Special Teams

The Rams special teams were like money in the bank, safe. It gets no better than Rams veteran punter Johnny Hekker. Rams recently this week awarded Hekker with an extension to lock him up through 2022, and $10 million guaranteed.

Hekker pinned the Colts inside of the 10-yard line practically every time he punted the ball. He leads the league with spotted punts and rarely is there a return. Look below and watch Hekker's craft in ball placement.

Johnny Hekker Pins The Football Inside the 10

Hekker who went to his third consecutive pro-bowl looks as if he'll be making a reservation once again this season.

Kicker Greg "Legatron" Zuerline, has been Mr. Automatic from the preseason to week one against the Colts. He yet to have missed a kick, and have been planting the ball in the back of the end zone during kickoffs.

Legatron nailed a 50-yard field goal against the Colts to give the Rams an early 3-0 lead. He kicked two more fields to remain perfect for the season, including this P.A.T.'s. His leg and Hekker's makes a single kicking punch that can use as the 12th man.

Cory Littleton, Samson Ebukam, and Josh Reynolds added great special team contribution too.

Game Preview of Redskins Vs Rams

Overview
This game could tell us a lot about whether the Los Angeles Rams are a potential playoff contender in 2017, or whether their opening day trouncing of Indianapolis was more about the Colts being wrong than about the Rams being good. Washington is not an elite team, but they are at least a fringe-type playoff contender. That probably can't be said about the Indianapolis Colts.

Matchup To Watch: Sammy Watkins vs Josh Norman

Rams Offense Vs. Washington Defense

One of the key matchups here could be Rams receiver Sammy Watkins against Redskins corner Josh Norman, who is widely considered to be about as close to being a "shutdown corner" as you will find in the NFL today.

It has appeared that the Redskins were assigning Norman to cover the leagues top receiver's more so than was the case last year, which could lead to an epic battle between two of the league's better players.

Rookie Rams receiver Cooper Kupp and tight end Gerald Everett could come into play if Watkins is not able to win that battle. One of the few things that didn't go especially well for the Rams against Indy was the running of Todd Gurley, although in fairness, a couple of nice runs by Gurley were nullified by penalties. The Rams would certainly like to see him put up some better numbers this week.

Don't Lie, Tell The TRUth!

The great play of Los Angeles Rams starting cornerback Trumaine Johnson on Sunday showed many fans on why he was ranked the highest and the number one corner on the market. Johnson in his sixth season as a member of the Rams showed the Indianapolis Colts quarterback Scott Tolzien that he wasn't a lie, by showing him the Truth with his defensive play.

Early in the first quarter, the Rams took a quick 3-0 lead over the Colts, as Tolzien attempted to complete a pass to wide receiver T.Y.Hilton, who was being covered by Johnson. Hilton, blanketed by Johnson coverage, couldn't do anything but watch Johnson intercept his intended pass and took it to the house for a 39-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Trumaine Johnson's Pick Six

This past off-season, Johnson was criticized by many fans of not working out a long-term contract extension to remain with the organization. The season prior, the Rams took a gamble by placing the franchise tag on Johnson that allowed Janoris Jenkins to walk away and sign with the New York Giants. Unable to come to a long-term deal with Johnson that offseason, the Rams placed the franchise tag on Johnson earning him nearly $14 million for the season.

Johnson and the Rams couldn’t work out a long-term deal this offseason either, as they placed the tag on him for the second consecutive season, earning him $16.7 million for the season. Both sides, being unable to come to terms, before the start of training camp, Johnson reported that it was clear he was not part of the Ram's plan moving forward. Rarely, do a team will find a cornerback standing 6-foot-2-inches, 210 pounds. They surely need to find a way to keep Johnson in Los Angeles to continue to work in a Wade Phillips defense.

The Rams placed a spanking on the visiting Colts on Sunday, as Johnson would end the day with one interception, one touchdown for 39 yards, two tackles, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, and one pass deflected. I'm confident, how about you, but Johnson showed up like he was having fun wearing the horns on Sunday. Defensive Coordinator Phillips seemed to be quite happy with Johnson's play, as he merely played a flawless game.

With the coverage Johnson played against the elite receiver, T.Y. Hilton, it visibly clear that Rams General Manager Les Snead will need to find a solution of trying to get this young Ram’s defense resigned with long-term deals.

Linebacker Alec Ogletree is playing in the final year of his contract of $8 million, as well as LeMarcus Joyner whom will be seeking extension talk. To add to the equation, recent holdout Aaron Donald is currently looking for an extension as well to his rookie contract.

No doubt about it, Jeff Fisher thumbprint will remain on this organization no matter how you try to erase his memory, as he stockpiled a great defense with great talented players. Without a doubt, as Johnson was part of Fisher's first draft class out of the University of Montana, he has been a great player despite his miserable 2016 season.

Expect to see Johnson contract negotiation become worked out within the next several weeks when the Rams face the Dallas Cowboys. Not a question that Tru will be matched up against the Cowboys best receiver Dez Bryant. If Johnson contains Bryant all game, we'll have to watch for the ticker of an extension for Johnson to be reported.

Johnson's play on the field is No Lie; he Tells The TRUth!

The Rams have released C/G J.J. Dielman, the claimed hours after the 53-man rosters were set across the NFL. Dielman who was a fifth-round selection for the Cincinnati Bengals didn't survive the Bengals final cuts, largely because he was outperformed.

The Rams claimed Dielman on September 3, 2017 (a younger cousin of Kris Dielman pro-bowl guard for the San Diego Chargers), because of his versatility and ability to play all over the offensive line. The release comes just days after the Rams were granted a roster exemption for All-Pro Defensive Lineman Aaron Donald, who ended his holdout on last Saturday, to rejoin the team. The Rams needed a roster spot but, it was a tough decision, as Dielman became the last man out.

The Rams reported they have the desire to have Dielman to return back to the team, and is optimistic that he will clear waivers and be signed to the practice squad. Dielman could be a hot commodity to other teams in the league, largely because of the immediate need of offensive linemen.

Rams Extend Two Players After Blow Out Of Colts

The Rams announced on Monday the extension of DL Ethan Westbrooks and punter Johnny Hekker.

Westbrooks, a 2014 UDFA out of West Texas A&M, signed back then a three year $1,550,000 contract; in April of the current year, the Rams managed to sign the RFA to a $1,797,000 deal that would link the player with the organization for one more year (reported by Ian Rapoport). In efforts to create much-needed cap space that will be used to sign Aaron Donald among other players, the front office offered Westbrooks a new contract extension through 2018, that will lower his 2017 salary from $1,797,000 to $1,250,000 but will earn him $1,750,000 in 2018. Westbrooks has shown signs throughout his career of being a capable starter, is a tremendous depth sign for an already killer Defensive line.

Hekker, who already had an extension encouraged by his outstanding game with the previous regime, signed a new contract extension that would leave the best punter in league with the Rams through 2022. Johnny established an NFL record of 51punts landing inside the 20, no other punter in history has had more than 40, showing the fantastic value to a team that has struggled in moving the ball in the past.
Former NFL punter Pat McAfee analyzed one of Hekker’s punts yesterday, remarking his amazing capabilities at the position, naming him “the best punter in the league.”

His contract is now worth $21 million, including $10,000,000 in guaranteed money, the highest ever given to a punter in history, pointed out by Adam Schefter of ESPN.

By locking these two players for the foreseeable future, the Rams now seek to reach calm waters with Aaron Donald and will keep trying to extend the 4th year player.

Let’s remember that Tavon Austin was signed to a significant extension last season that he hasn’t lived up. Next year he will become expendable, as he would “only” count for $8,000,000 against the cap, and there are other players more fundamental to the core of this team that will seek an extension, names like Alec Ogletree, Trumaine Johnson, SAMMY WATKINS (there, I said it) have more impact in the team system than the former 8th overall.

Justin Davis Switches Jersey Number

Over the course of the last three seasons, the #33 worn by former Rams undrafted free agent E.J.Gaines. Gaines traded to the Buffalo Bills for the Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins.

Tomorrow afternoon, the number 33 jersey worn by another rookie undrafted free agent, Rams running back, Justin Davis. Davis requested the change after he informed of making the Rams 53-man roster. When asked, why for the change, it all boiled down from the request of one particular person, his mother.

Davis mother expressed she was unaware of the fact that running backs could wear a #40 number.  She was under the impression that running backs could only wear numbers in the 20’s and 30’s. Davis informed his mother that NFL running backs are permitted to wear the numbers between 20 – 49 by the league rules commision

His mother and friends asked him to make the switch, something that he made possible. His family and friends said #42 didn’t look right on him.  Now people are saying that #33 didn’t look right on him at this point. He informed them to give it a couple of weeks it’ll seem better.

Davis will now sport the jersey of other notable Ram running backs who played and wore the #33 jersey. Players such as 1972 NFL Hall of Fame Inductee Ollie Matson, 1979 Heisman Trophy Winner, Charles White, 1980 Third Round Draft Selection Jewerl Thomas, and Justin Watson, who made comments into the camera at Super Bowl XXXVI , shortly before Tom Brady lead his New England Patriots team down the field for the game-winning field goal.
