DRAFT YR:  2019     COMBINE INVITE: NO

Player Bio: Daniel Cooney is a massive kid that grew up about 18 miles from Chicago, Illinois.  Cooney's body, his size was so impressively large, and skills were minimal, or let us say he was all the more so by the fact very raw. Cooney struggled after arriving at the University of San Diego with his weight and also struggled with his conditioning. Cooney decided to dedicate himself to the weight room, dieted with adding health muscle to change his playing weight and improved his strength. Cooney dedication improved himself to the following accolades:
Two-time AFCA FCS Coaches' All-America second team (2016, 2017)
Two-time All-PFL first team (2016, 2017)
2017 Preseason STATS FCS All-America second team
2017 All-PFL Preseason Team

Game Film
#75 Daniel Cooney vs. North Dakota St (2017)

Strengths: A player with an incredibly massive body with an enormous wingspan. Play the game with good fundamental skills and recognition of pass rush. Has the ability to drop anchor with power rushers and maintaining his base.

Weaknesses:
Speed is a definite no one of Cooney traits. Tend to come out stance a bit slow. Needs to get stronger at the next level. Bull rushers can push him back before he can set his anchor. Releases block too soon at the second level. Hesitate and tends to drag when the play is away from his side of the line.

Draft Grade: 3.15

Draft Projection: 7th - UDFA

Does He Fit? Cooney will attract some interest during the draft process; however, he will either be a day three draft selection or UDFA. A definite project player that will necessarily become a reserve who can step up in case of an emergency in a couple of years. Aaron Kromer, the Los Angeles Rams offensive line coach, will love this kids size as well as coaching him into a pro-bowl caliber player.
